I have a question of what is **SUPPORTED by Microsoft** in doing in-place upgrades based on the attached chart. The question is based on what is defined as your starting OS point in the chart (on the left side of chart). I believe the starting OS point is defined as original OS **based on a clean install**. Or is the starting OS point simply what the current OS is, even after a successful in-place OS upgrade?<\/p>\n

For example – we have virtual Windows Servers which started out on a clean OS install of Windows Server 2008 (not R2) x64. I know this because 10 years ago, I performed the clean OS VM installs. Earlier last year, i did an in-place upgrade to Windows Server 2012 R2 on the server VMs.<\/p>\n

Now the Web Team wants to go straight to Windows Server 2019. I built brand new 2019 VMs for a clean install and indicated transfer of data which is right way to go. However the web teams wants to do in-place upgrades to Server 2019 from Server 2012R2. My argument is that this is not supported by Microsoft based on the attached chart based on my definition of the starting OS point which would be the top left of chart since the servers started off as Windows Server 2008.<\/p>\n
